18000 Brown Boveri Gas Turbine.
This loco was ordered by the Great Western Railway from the Swiss
manufacturers
of Brown Boveri, but the loco was not delivered until after
nationalization.
She was found to be un-reliable and expensive to run, consuming
as much fuel when
standing idle as when running at full speed. After withdrawal,
she returned to Switzerland
and was used for testing electric motors. The turbine was removed
and the bogie at one
end modified. The loco has now returned to this country and
cosmetically restored to
early British Railways black livery and can be seen at Crewe
