The Westford Crane
started out as a second hand Tri-Ang/Hornby crane.
The crane was stripped down to it's component parts and then
re-assembled with various extra components and modifications
incorporated to make a more realistic model.
Slaters microstrip was used to improve the jib. Wheels from an
Airfix German half track Gun Tractor were used for the large
pully wheels used for lifting the jib. The cylinders and
crossheads/coupling rods are from the Airfix Stephensons Rocket.
The winding drums etc., were from odd plastic items from the
scrap box. (I rarely throw anything away!)
The pivot between the crane body and the undercarriage was
carefully cut off and repositioned further 'forward'. Some
additional work was carried out to the undercarriage regarding
the out riggers. A compensated 'floating' system was used to
mount the Jackson wheelsets.
The support bogies and the crane runner wagon were quite severely
chopped about.
The following photo's and those on the next couple of pages will, hopefully help those who wish to do a similar conversion.
